JTG MINI: The Ashlee Simpson Lip Sync Scandal

2026-10-29

October 23, 2004. Ashlee Simpson walks out to sing 'Autobiography' on 'Saturday Night Live', the band kicks in, and the wrong song comes out of the speakers: her own voice singing 'Pieces of Me', while her microphone is down by her side and her mouth is shut. She freezes, does a little jig, and runs off stage. Apparently the first musical guest in SNL history to not finish a set.

Her explanation was acid reflux and doctor's orders. But SNL doesn't let anyone mime, '60 Minutes' happened to have cameras backstage that week, and Lorne Michaels was not thrilled. So what actually happened?

This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of the Ashlee Simpson SNL lip sync scandal: the 'Newlyweds' little sister marketed as the authentic one, dad-manager Joe Simpson selling her as the punk alternative to Jessica Simpson, the episode of 'The Ashlee Simpson Show' built to spin the whole thing, and the Masked Singer win 22 years later.
